Experience, Wisdom, Appreciation.

Ethan Kripke, a 2nd generation Towanda-er, completed his Club year, is currently in 10th grade and will be back in the future as a counselor! This past July, Ethan wrote the following reflection as his sermon to the rest of camp.

IMG_7116Lots of camper sermons start out with something along the lines of: the first time I stepped off the bus onto Camp Towanda, I was scared. It was a strange new place, filled with people I didn’t know yet, and I was without my family for the first time. My experience, however, was a little different. I had been raised on stories of camp for my whole life. Thanks to encouragement from my father, my brother, and my sister, I was more than ready to hop on the bus and go. I was excited for the weeks to come, with activities and sports, talent shows, trip days, Olympics, and of course, making new friends.

So, for me, the last time I stepped off the bus onto Camp Towanda, I was scared. It was my final year as a camper, and I knew that after the summer, I might not see some of my friends for a very long time. And though this fear has been plaguing me from the beginning of this summer, I have since come to realize that it has also helped me to appreciate the summer even more. It motivates me to have as much fun as possible while I still can, and to be the best I can be to the people who have been a huge part of my life for seven whole years.

In these years, here at Camp Towanda, I have learned many lessons that I have used and will continue to use throughout my life. In this respect, camp is just as important as traditional schooling. At camp, you learn how to take care of yourself and gain personal independence, while also learning and appreciating the value of trust and teamwork. Camp is a place where you understand that friendship is one of the strongest bonds on Earth, and can overcome any challenge. These types of lessons are never taught at school, yet are seamlessly integrated into the daily life of Towanda, helping you learn from your experiences, whether they are mistakes or successes. That’s the beauty of camp: no matter the activity, you’re having fun while also learning, even if you don’t realize it at the time.

club13One of the most important lessons I have learned throughout my time at camp is to live in the moment. While it would be easy to spend my days reliving the past or only worrying about what is to come, I would find that my summers become less enjoyable, and some important experiences would pass me by. In the end, the advice that I have to give to the younger campers (of which I was one) is to cherish the “now”—not the “then”, or the ‘will be’, and to fully appreciate things as they happen, because before you know it, they will only be fond memories.

Here are 3 delicious ways to enjoy our Towanda Turkey Veggie Chili: 1) Over Rice 2) In a Burrito 3) Baked in a Mini Pie.

The Last Day of Summer

Although camp looks and sounds like a GHOST town on this last full day of summer; the air smells like apples, the chickens are now delivering eggs and the fields are being limed! We are able to reflect on another BEST SUMMER EVER as we begin preparation for The Summer of 2014; which unofficially starts next weekend, September 28th, when we kick it off with our annual Fall Foliage BBQ!

We have a big crowd coming, the forecast looks good and the Dorm Girls of 2014 are hosting!  In the meantime, I’ll be waving on the Live Camp Cam (check it out on our APP)… and don’t forget your sunscreen!!!!

  5.  What was your favorite camp activity? My favorite camp activity was soccer!
  6. What was your most memorable moment at camp? My most memorable moment at camp was during the last few weeks of Dorm summer. I accidentally threw out an envelope filled with cash that my mom and dad had sent me to put in the bank for the last few camp trips. I got out of the shower and was about to get dressed for dinner when I saw an envelope filled with the same amount of money on my bed–my dorm sisters each chipped in and replaced every dollar for me. That was when I realized that I was part of a group of girls that would do absolutely anything for one another without being asked.

  8.  What words of wisdom would you share with today’s campers? Don’t be scared to keep going back to camp for as long as you can. People who say that “it is time to become a part of the real world,” don’t understand that Camp Towanda is as real as it gets.

  10.  If you could add a rule for GHOST, what would it be? If it is after lunch, and sloppy joes were served AT lunch, you are not allowed to aim at someone’s stomach.

Last summer pretzel chicken was the crowd favorite! This year we had a Mexican Fiesta, Sushi Night and enough desserts to make everyone happy!

Remember these Brownies a la Farm? Well you can make them for back to school lunches, post-soccer snacks or bring to your Jewish Holiday celebration. And you’ll think fondly of Camp Towanda while you are enjoying them! Check back for more Camp Towanda Culinary Recipes, coming soon!!!

Mitch’s Last Days Reflections- Summer 2013

Well the rain has cleared and our campers are united with their “Winter Families”.  It was an emotional few days to close out the lucky summer of 2013.

During packing day, we went to each bunk and hung up their Bunk Plaque (shaped like a Lego piece), said our goodbyes to each camper and with the final hit of the hammer declared that the kids in that bunk “are part of these walls forever”.

Our final banquet dinner was filled with emotional words, gifts and thoughts. the Final Friday Nite Flix and the burning of the numbers.

What an incredible, rewarding, proud, all-encompassing, nurturing, loving, fun, active and terrific experince for our summer Camp Towanda family.

I wish I had the ability to put into words what really goes on here; to watch each camper (and staff member) arrive somewhat innocently bewildered and leave a more confident, kinder and experienced person…….

It is amazing, many kids show up here crying; and now they are leaving crying!

As we carried the torch to light the numbers (2013), our “tear- jerker” playlist might indicate how we were all feeling…and as the busses departed in the rain, we could hear these songs over the speakers (click here to listen).

We thank our campers’ parents for entrusting us with their precious children; we took the responsibility seriously; loved and cared for them and hopefully, with our incredible staff, made an impact on their road to becoming great adults.

Camp Towanda is a very unique and special place for so many reasons…and each year, it seems so much more important to be a part of it….

We hope everyone enjoys the next 10 months and we can wait to see you soon in June (and hopefully before!)!

2013 4 Reiters

Unplugged @ Camp!

What an amazing 7 weeks it’s been, living life, blissfully unplugged at Camp Towanda!  Of course our fans at home were very much PLUGGED IN to what we were doing at camp (with the Camp Cam practically exploding on a daily basis from all those views!).  Remember this video?

Our campers (and staff) enjoyed so many benefits of being tech-free for 7 weeks.

  • They connected at the dinner table with each other…their hands, device-free to clap and cheer and eat camp delicacies!
  • They enjoyed silly bunk conversations after ‘lights-out’ without feverishly texting under the glow of a cellphone.
  • They sang old-school camp songs with each other on the bus instead of watching You Tube videos and playing games.
  • They talked face-to-face and actually made eye contact to share stories and resolve issues.
  • They didn’t stop every few steps to take a ‘selfie’!
  • At camp…we live in the moment!!!!

It has been so refreshing…they actually said they felt happier, free and cleansed!

unplugged

As campers get off the bus tomorrow, embrace their parents and loved ones, it won’t be long before they reach for their devices and start virtually ‘reconnecting’.  We expect a flood of new ‘likes’, loves, comments and posts on our @camptowanda accounts…as they start sharing and reliving the 2013 summer!!!  We expect some bunkmates to create virtual bunks with group texts and Facebook groups (hopefully including everyone, since that’s the Towanda way!).  And we expect they will slowly enjoy re-entering the real world, reaching out to their friends outside the Towanda family.

We encourage you to take this ‘re-entry’ time as a fresh start…an opportunity talk with your kids about their online activities and what they may have learned from their unplugged experience this summer. You may even want to create a ‘tech-free zone’ at home (and call it ‘unplugged at Towanda time’)?!!!

Of course, there are some amazing things about the virtual world!!! We love that it keeps our Camp Family connected all year and we look forward to hearing about everyone’s adventures and seeing their smiling faces grace our @camptowanda Instagram feed!  We are here as your parenting partners should any camp-related, virtual/real-world issues arise.  You can also check out our “Social Media Smarts” Pinterest board for some great articles about kids, teens and the virtual world.

Now get ready to hug, kiss and enjoy having your kids back in your house…because at camp, we’re going to be very lonely without them!
