The Campers are Coming Home!

10583787_10100819434150911_1211792499_nYou made it. 7 weeks ago, you let them go, with tears behind your sunglasses, and trusted us with your precious cargo.  When we return them to you on Friday, you will feel a change, you will see a change and you will feel pride that you gave your kids the best gift you ever could have given them.  They may not be able to tell you every detail you want to hear.  They may be emotionally drained from saying goodbye.  They most likely will spend their days reconnecting with camp friends and holding on to every last memory, experience and bond.

We have given you a peak into their experience. You have looked through thousands of photos this summer, made Friday Nite Flix a Saturday morning ritual and checked the Camp Cam every now and then (speaking of which- we are proud of you parents for only crashing the camp cam a couple times this summer!).  Now is their turn to share their side of the stories.

Gone are the innocent days when parents picked up their child from the bus and asked how Olympics broke out.  In the old days, parents really had no clue and were so excited to hear it all! We know that “you know”, but please pretend like you don’t and ask all the same questions.  Hear what they saw, what they experienced, what they conquered. Their stories are better than any photo we may have captured.

Speaking of photos, if you saved their Campminder photos, let your camper see them! Maybe they will want to share them with you from their perspective (if they choose to keep those moments to themselves…that’s okay too).  Remember when you thought your child missed an activity because they weren’t in the group photo? Wait until they tell you they were laughing so hard they needed to run to the bathroom! Have them sing you their Olympics songs (we posted the song sheets on the blog). Let them make you a camp meal (our digital Culinary Kitchen Cookbook is coming soon!). But also realize this was THEIR experience and they may not want to share it all.  It is an experience they can hold as their own and only something they and their camp friends can truly understand.   And that’s what makes it so special!

You will notice change…we cannot promise it will all last (especially living unplugged-and not only surviving but thriving, reading at rest time, making their beds, eating with napkins on their laps and cleaning their showers).  We hope as parents you learned and grew from this experience as well (I know I have!).  See which of these “changes” you can make last, because we know your kids can do it!  Consider adding some “tech-free” times to your family routine…you can even call it “Towanda Time!”–THAT will get them into it!

You made it. They did it. And we can’t wait to do it all over again in 317 days.

THIS IS IT! Olympics 2014 BREAKOUT!

Sound the air horn. THIS IS IT! Olympics 2014 has officially begun! But let’s rewind to hear how it all went down.

ccfe028d-3cb0-4020-8632-a737786d1be5Yesterday we had another attempt at an all-camp canteen after lunch; this time it actually happened; which was followed by an unprecedented AIRBANDS in the middle of the day ON the main basketball court (just like the old days). Airbands is our very creative choreographed lip sync contest. Many presentations that were fantastic but The National boys won with their FAMILY GUY MEDLEY.  The day continued but one just didn’t know which direction to look.. an air horn blasting there… my shirt changing colors at a faster rate (like every 5 minutes for a few hours)  then we said it was early showers (but why?). The boys lined up at flagpole 15 minutes early (lying down on the grassy knoll by the time the girls arrived)…..then a very short free play, what was happening????

Kids were guessing, oh it’s a rock and roll team or it is going to be something retro or nostalgic or it is lasers against strobes and on and on and on.

But it was just another night of evening activity…an exciting, super-charged, high-energy 1st ever night of MARS VS VENUS (or better explained as boys camp vs girls camp) challenge night of balloon tosses, pie throwing, sponge toss, and so on…mixed in with a couple of dance parties.  We had the amphitheater rockin once again! The “friendsy’ was again at an energized height…so much so, that I think no one was thinking about Olympics anymore for those moments.

BUT THEN, in the middle of the energy of MARS VS VENUS a snowmobile appeared seemingly out of nowehere and raced across the lawn between the amphitheter steps and the stage…. Air horns blared, Pink Floyd’s “Is anybody out there” echoed not only in the amphitheter but throughout the camp PA system…..

The crowd chased after the snowmobile which led the entire camp racing toward the main basketball court… While racing, you could see smoke billowing in the air which seemed like it was coming from the area of the main basketball court…as you got closer, “is anybody out there” was now blasting as loud as you can imagine from the mansion roof…but wait……

854e0237-3d25-497a-b8fd-95211bf11121

THERE WAS A SNOWSTORM HAPPENING ON THE MAIN BASKETBALL COURT and surrounding area….REALLY…over 3 inches of snow blanketed this huge area….. and then about a dozen more snowmobiles came racing down the hill from boys camp and pulled up to the outskirts of the basketball court….flanked by 15 lifeguards!

ed68816d-955a-45bc-95ac-bcf1b023fb4f

Our attention then focused on the center court …snow everywhere…… the banners unfurled…we were witnessing the RED LIFE GUARDS VS THE BLUE SKI PATROL!

People were on snowmobiles, carrying skiis, boots and poles….lifeguards were carrying flippers, goggles and life-saving buoys…..   it seemeed as if the snow was real, the snow guns blanketing camp…

And then,THE HEAD JUDGE (Bobby), perched on his stand, blasted the air horn and declared the start of OLYMPICS 2014!

536d74da-172a-437a-94c2-04467a77fa82

The crowd was crazy……  the lifeguards started shoveling a path on the slippery court….black non skid mats were placed for the soon to be announced Generals, Camper Captains (cc’s), Lieutenants and Sergeants to come running down…slipping and sliding together to lead their teams….

After the teams were split, they had a meeting  and then we all gathered on the grassy knoll to light the Olympic rings in flame…..

e16a7343-7c6a-4b68-bca8-f04182d9376aMy friends, Olympics has started, it was crazy, it was intense, it was a SNOWSTORM…..

Kids of every age came up to me and were high fiving me or tossing snow and saying ‘That was  THE BEST ever”…it certainly ranks up there as A W E S O M E, surreal and oh my WOW!!!

It was fun to plan, fun to put together and fun to watch happen….everyone is pumped!!! Let the games begin (if you need me I will be on the Ghost court for the next 5 days reffing 87 games, and lovin every bit of it)!!!

Camp Towanda Athletic Accomplishments 2013

soccerteamThe Camp Towanda Athletic Department enjoyed another successful season this year, with our campers participating in over 145 athletic events throughout this camp season. Summer 2013 kicked off with our 33 boys’ teams and 23 girls’ teams competing in multiple Wayne County Tournament games, and ended with 15 teams contending for a championship in the finals. Throughout the summer, campers are offered a wide variety of sports to take part in. Levels of competition range from inter-camp play dates and Fun Fridays, where everyone can play, to Invitational Tournaments, both here and at many of the other 30 Wayne County Athletic Association member camps, to the select try-out teams of the Wayne County Tournament. Many of our teams met with great success this year, with 52 of 56 teams playing in the quarterfinal round.

For athletes looking for an even more intensive athletic experience, we offer the Master Camp program, where our professional coaches and college athletes work with interested campers on a
more individualized basis to hone specific skills.

See you on the fields in 2014!

We’re Good Sports!

soccerteamIn addition to the family atmosphere, the intense spirit, tradition, legacy and incredible camaraderie that flows through our camp, the summer of 2013 has also been a very successful season for Towanda Athletics.

We are proud of our kids’ sportsmanship, participation and respect of other camps, as well as teamwork and Towanda pride.

Although our tournaments are still going on as we speak, we thought this would be a good time to share a recap of the ‘lucky summer of ’13’:

Everyday, our campers are engaging in instruction, skill development and games in virtually every sport.  Our coaches, who consist of professionals, high school coaches and college players are top-notch and work with groups, teams, and individuals.

We offer what we call MasterCamp Clinics in Tennis, Soccer, Gymnastics and Basketball throughout the summer, for those campers who want extra focus in these sports (adding Lacrosse in 2014).

We have a very healthy balance and well-rounded program that keeps ALL our campers very happy, motivated and excelling; from our awesome and excellent athletes to our campers who “could go either way”!

Our kids thrive because we don’t put on the pressure and give the parents a much-needed break from getting caught up in the competition from afar (which is why we don’t live-tweet games or share daily scores).  Some of our families are in the intense sports circuit for 10 months of the school year with travel sports and practices. It’s refreshing that when the pressure is off…our kids are winners!  They feel good, everyone plays and it is a team that cares about each other!

We offer different levels of competition based on levels of interest and ability.  For those who are interested in continuing an intense focus in a particular sport, we offer plenty of opportunity through MasterCamp and Tournament play.  For those who want to try something new or less competitive, we offer friendly competition through inter-camps and scrimmages.  We participate in a great program with other Wayne County Camp Association camps including: Wayne County Tournaments (which run all summer and are single elimination), Inter-camp Tournaments, Towanda Invitationals and Fun Friday Inter-murals.  And of course, the grand daddy of them all…our Camp Towanda Olympics (which is also the most fun and spirited).

As you know, Camp Towanda is about so much more than sports, although they are of course a big part of our program.  To date, we have had over 40 wins in Wayne County Camp Association soccer, basketball, baseball, football, tennis and lacrosse tournaments; including (only to date so far) SIX Championships and SEVEN 2nd Places. Still to come, another 12 teams have reached the championship round (yet to be played).  In addition, we have won FOUR Towanda Invitational Tournaments so far and victories in casual inter-camp playdates.

Regardless, win or lose, the teams are called up to the flagpole for recognition!  Because we are really most proud of the excellent sportsmanship, team support and camaraderie which is paramount to our coaching philosophy and our Towanda values!
